A rear splashguard stops coolant splatter from soaking your shop and keeps chips from flying behind the mill. Here is how to diagnose the problem and fit one.

Quick answer

A rear splashguard redirects coolant and chips that spray behind the mill, keeping your work area cleaner and reducing cleanup time. It is a low-cost upgrade that pays for itself in convenience.

Why coolant splatter is a real problem

Without a rear splashguard, coolant from the cutting zone can arc over the back of the mill table and land on the floor, on nearby tools, or on the machine's own wiring and motor housing. Over time, that residue can cause corrosion, electrical issues, and a slippery floor hazard. Chips that fly behind the mill are also harder to sweep up and can work their way into the column ways or lead screw nuts.

A dedicated splashguard is a simple sheet-metal or plastic shield that bolts or clips to the rear of the mill column. It catches the spray before it escapes. Many mini mills, including HiTorque and SIEG models, have a factory mounting location for one.

Trade-off: integrated vs. add-on splashguards

Some mini mill cabinets include a built-in rear panel that doubles as a splashguard. If you already have a full cabinet with a chip tray, you might not need an extra guard. But if you bench-mount your mill, the open rear is a direct path for debris. An add-on splashguard is the most practical fix for bench setups.

A rear splashguard alone won't catch chips that bounce sideways or forward. For full chip control, combine it with a chip tray and side shields. The chip tray catches what falls straight down, while the splashguard blocks the back arc.

Diagnosis: Is a rear splashguard your fix?

  • Symptom: Coolant puddles on the floor behind the mill or chips accumulate on the bench rear edge after every job.
  • Likely cause: The mill is bench-mounted without a rear shield. Coolant spray and chips travel in an arc over the back of the table.
  • Corrective action: Install a rear splashguard designed for your mill model. Check for pre-drilled mounting holes on the column. If holes exist, the guard bolts directly; if not, you may need to drill and tap or use adhesive brackets. After installation, run a short test with coolant to confirm the spray is contained. If splash still escapes from the sides, add side shields or a full chip tray.
  • Stop or choose another option: If your mill already has a full cabinet with an integrated rear panel, you do not need a separate splashguard. If chips are a problem only on the bench surface, a chip tray alone may be sufficient. For bench-top setups with open rear, the splashguard is a simple, effective fix.

Products that help with chip control

  • Chip Tray, HiTorque Mini Mill: Chip tray for HiTorque and SIEG X2D/X2L/SX2L mini mills. Dimensions are 16.1" x 19.3" x 0.9". Predrilled holes are sized for securing a compatible mill. This tray sits under the mill to catch falling chips and coolant drips, keeping them off the bench. It works with the rear splashguard to contain debris from two directions.
